Why Rainwater Harvesting?

Rainwater harvesting systems are incorporated into building projects for various reasons, most of which stem from water conservation and sustainable development goals. Rainwater harvesting is being implemented more and more often to meet regulatory approval requirements for stormwater management and in an effort to obtain certification credits under green build programs such as Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED).

Introducing Reflo: More Than Parts & Components

Reflo™ is a pre-engineered rainwater harvesting system designed for multi-residential, commercial, institutional and industrial use. This turnkey packaged system consists of pretreatment, filtration, storage, pumps and automated controls for disinfection and distribution.

While it may seem that designing a rainwater harvesting system is a task of putting parts and components together, in our experience it is more complex. It requires engineering to ensure the system operates simply and reliably, meets all local regulations, codes and standards, and that high water quality performance is achieved.

Complete Package

Green Turtle analyzes rainwater availability and consumption using unique modeling software that ultimately recommends the optimal water storage tank size.

Green Turtle works with the site plan and local regulations to recommend the optimal design, layout and configuration of the Reflo components. The Reflo system is designed to give the greatest degree of design flexibility of any system on the market.

Single Source
Green Turtle provides a single source of supply for all components of the Reflo system, including a fully integrated system operations manual. The designer or end-user need not concern themselves with purchasing and integrating the 30+ system components in a typical rainwater harvesting system.

Green Turtle takes responsibility for the overall performance of the system, from making sure that there is always a secure supply of water even in drought conditions, to ensuring that local water quality requirements are met.

Key Design Features
Reflo systems are designed to provide a high level of filtration at the front end of the system. Fine sediment and grit, especially hard, silica-based granules, are particularly damaging to pumps, valves and plumbing systems. By removing over 99% of the suspended solids prior to the storage tank, the Reflo system reduces maintenance frequency and increases the operating life of storage tanks, pumps and plumbing fixtures.

Water that is free of suspended solids will have a lower chlorine demand where chlorine disinfection is used, and will have a lower turbidity (uses less UV light) where UV disinfection is used, decreasing overall operating costs versus competitive systems.

Ultra™ Filtration System
The extremely high level of flitration is achieved through Green Turtle's Ultra™ Filtration System (UFS) - the "heart" of the Reflo System. The UFS is a three-in-one device that pretreats, filters and diverts excess flows all in one pre-engineered fiberglass structure. Large particles such as leaves and sand collect at the bottom of the tank, while the filter cartridges filter fine sediment as small as 2 microns. The UFS incorporates an automated self-cleaning mechanism for the filter cartridges to decrease maintenance frequency. The filter cartridges are reusable which reduces operating cost and is more environmentally friendly.

The UFS operates with low headloss and is designed to treat 90% or more of the annual stormwater runoff volume.  Flows in excess of the design flow are diverted to the stormwater sewer or other acceptable receiving or conveyance structure. The flexible design of the UFS can meet the challenges of existing stormwater pipe inverts.

Water Quality
Atmospheric deposition due to urbanized activities results in polluted water to be washed off of surfaces such as roofs.  These deposits tend to be small in size and cannot be captured merely by coarse screens.  The amount of deposits can be significant in urban centers, especially where there are more vehicle traffic and construction activities.  It is important to capture these pollutants to meet water quality objectives for protecting human health as well as protecting the components of the treatment and plumbing systems.

Smart, Simple Durable
The Reflo design focuses on human factor engineering, design efficiency and durable construction.  The result is a smart and simple system that is easy to install, operate, and maintain, uses very little energy to operate, and produces high quality water. Fiberglass tanks and structures are chosen for their durability, non-porous structure, and ability to be molded into pre-engineered structures.
